SSAA Glenorchy
How do I start the Sport of Shooting?
Let's face it... it can feel pretty daunting to commence any new hobby or sport, let alone something as exciting as shooting! The following are our pro tips for getting started, so let's shelve that anxiety, and indulge your curiosity!
Step 1.
The first step in the journey is to come to the club and have a chat with one of our volunteers. At SSAA Glenorchy we LOVE meeting new enthusiasts and are always happy to talk to you about the sport and the club, and answer any questions you may have.
Check out our Calendar & Roster to see when the club is open, or phone us
on 0412 299 209 for more info.
Step 2.
Right... you've had a chat with us, and looked around the club.
And you're thinking "this could be fun!" Now its time for the dreaded paperwork! - but seriously, it's relatively quick and easy so lets get started.
To shoot at SSAA Glenorchy you will need to obtain an Exemption Certificate.
A club official will have you fill in and sign an application form, which they will co sign, and then the club will submit this on your behalf to Tasmania Police Firearms Services.
Firearms Services will conduct a background check to assess your suitability to hold an Exemption Certificate, and you will be notified of the outcome directly.
Once you have received your Exemption Certificate from Firearms Services, you may bring it to SSAA Glenorchy on a Saturday morning to receive a Club Induction and a Safety Briefing from the Range Officer.

Step 3.
While you are waiting for your Exemption Certificate you will also need to join the SSAA (Sporting Shooters Association of Australia), and the SSAA Glenorchy Club.
You can join the SSAA online by visiting their website https://membership.ssaa.org.au/new-membership and completing the online form and paying the relevant fees for your membership category.
On receipt of your SSAA membership number you may apply to join the SSAA Glenorchy Club by .......
WHAT IS THE PROCESS AND THE COST? IS THERE A FORM?
Step 4.
Now the fun part! Once you receive your Exemption Certificate you can shoot at the Glenorchy ranges for a period of 6 months, to learn the fundamentals of range safety and begin to hone your skills.
At SSAA Glenorchy you will start on the Practice Range under the careful supervision of our highly experienced Range Officers.
Once they are happy you are a safe and competent shooter, you can start to dabble in some of the other disciplines offered at the Club (please see our Disciplines page for more detail).
Step 5.
Complete a firearms licence application form
Check your 100 points of identity
Find out what fees relate to the class of licence you wish to obtain (1. Handgun or 2. Rifle & Shotgun or 3. Both classes)
Head to Services Tasmania to submit your application form, 100 points of ID, photocopies of 100 points for certification and pay the relevant fees.
Soon after you will receive a letter from Firearms Services confirming that your application has progressed and you are approved to enrol in a Firearms Safety Training Course (or alternatively that your application has not been granted, and sadly thus ends your journey).
You must enrol in the Safety Training Course within 6 months of receiving this letter.
